Season 1 of the series was aired on 11th October 1975 with total 24 episodes. The short films like Albert Brooks, Muppets in the Land of Gorch by Jim Hempson, and the live commercials for Polaroid were highly appreciated. The season ended on 31st July 1976. The second season aired on 18th September 1976 with total 23 episodes. Chevy Chase left the show after the sixth episode to be replaced by Bill Murray. The show was hosted by Steve Martin for the first time who hosted the show a record 14 times. Jane Curtin was the first female to anchor of Weekend Update. The season ended on 21st May 1977. Season 3 consisted of 20 episodes and was first telecast on 24th September 1977. The Festrunk Brothers, Olympia Café, and Nerds were introduced in this season. The finale was telecast on 20th May 1978. The 4th season started on 7th October 1978 and included 20 episodes. The sketches were based on child molestation, nuclear power reduction etc. Father Guido Sarducci was introduced while John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd left after the finale on 26th May 1979. 13th October 1979 saw the start of the 5th season which consisted of 21 episodes. Lorne Michaels left after this season as it was supposed to end the series with the finale on 24th May 1980. The 6th season was aired on 15th Nov 1980 with a total of 13 episodes. The show’s new star cast crew with a new producer, Jean Doumanian did not do well and the season is considered the worst season of the entire series. The season ended on 11th April 1981. In the seventh season, Dick Ebersol, replaced Jean Doumanian and was premiered on 3rd October 1981 with total 20 episodes. The show, even with a new cast and crew was well received. The season ended on 22nd May 1982. In the 8th season the show was back with its original format with the first episode airing on 25th September 1982. There were a total of 20 episodes. Don Pardo returned as the announcer for the show. The season ended on 14th May 1983. Season 9 started on 8th October 1983. The season had total 19 episodes. Eddie Murphy left the show after the 14th episode. Jim Belushi was hired as a cast member. The season ended on 12th may 1984. The first episode of the 10th season was telecast on 6th October 1985. The season was reduced to a total of 17 episodes due to the writer’s strike and funds shortage. Veteran comedians like Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer, and Martin Short etc appeared on the show. The finale was telecast on 13th April 1986. Lorne Michaels returned as the executive producer of the show for the 9th season which premiered on 9th Nov 1985 with total 18 episodes. A homosexual male and a black woman were introduced as cast members.
The show ended on 24th May 1986. NBC Vice-President, Brandon Tartikoff’s planed to cancel the show after the dreadful performance of the 11th season. However, Lorne convinced him to air the 12th season with a better cast. Jan Hooks, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, etc were hired as cast members. The season premiered on 11th October 1986 with 20 episodes and ended on 23rd May 1987. The 13th season of the series started on 17th October 1987. Kevin Nealon, was upgraded from a featured player to a repertory player. Due to the writer’s strike, the season was cut short to only 13 episodes with the final episode telecast on 27th Feb. 1988. The 14th season was aired on 8th October 1988. The sketches like Wayne’s World and Nude Beach were highly appreciated. The season ended on 20th May 1989 with a total of 21 episodes. The 15th season was aired on 24th September 1989 with a special episode to mark the 15th anniversary. In this season, the three most featured hosts of the series, John Goodman, Christopher Walken and Alec Baldwin were introduced. The season consisted of a total of 21 episodes and the finale was aired on 19th May 1990.
